L'installazione Between the Waves evoca paesaggi che appaiono contemporaneamente ultraterreni e profondamente terrestri. Nell’opera, gli spettatori possono distinguere le caratteristiche dei deserti, delle mangrovie, delle città, delle discariche, dei mari o delle piscine, luoghi familiari, comuni nel nostro pianeta. Tuttavia, l'abbigliamento dei performer che appaiono nel video e le loro interazioni con l'ambiente circostante conferiscono a questi scenari un senso di straniamento. Nel film si rappresenta un’intricata sensualità che governa i rapporti tra i corpi e le immagini, siano essi vegetali, animali o minerali, composti di materiali grezzi o al contrario fabbricati.
Si narra un universo ricco dove colori, texture e suoni si fondono senza attenersi a gerarchie prestabilite. Questa fusione sensoriale sfida un principio centrale dei discorsi moderni e universalizzanti: la nozione del soggetto che si costruisce come umano attraverso la separazione, classificazione e successiva appropriazione delle cose del mondo.
In Between the Waves la materia è raffigurata come caratterizzata da una superficie sensibile e reattiva, inseparabile da ciò che la circonda, come ad esempio gli ornamenti per la testa indossati dai performer: bianchi e dalla marcata verticalità che fa sì che essi si staglino carichi di una qualità fallica priva di connotazioni genitali. O come i fiori artificiali, le spugne da bagno e i vari oggetti colorati accuratamente posizionati sul fondo di una piscina, dentro cui i performer nuotano simulando delle creature acquatiche. Posizionandosi al di là della dicotomia tra natura e artificio, Tejal Shah invita a trascendere i confini convenzionali e a contemplare l'interazione tra l'umano e il non umano.
Tejal Shah (Bhilai, India, 1979) è un’artista contemporanea che esplora questioni di genere, sessualità, identità e diritti umani attraverso la fotografia, la videoarte e le installazioni. Ha studiato fotografia in Australia e belle arti negli Stati Uniti. Identificandosi come queer, focalizza il suo lavoro sulle esperienze LGBTQ+ e la relazione tra natura e umanità. Between the Waves conjures landscapes that appear simultaneously otherworldly and deeply terrestrial. Within these scenes, viewers may discern the familiar features of deserts, balconies, mangroves, cities, landfill sites, seas, or swimming pools—mundane locations found across our planet. Yet, the performers' attire and their interactions with each other and their surroundings imbue these settings with a captivating sense of strangeness. Sensuality governs the connections between bodies – whether they be plant, animal, or mineral, composed of raw or manufactured material – and the portrayal of these connections is intricate.
In this richly textured universe, characterized by both rawness and imagination, colors, textures, and sounds meld together without adhering to taxonomic hierarchies. This sensory blending challenges a central tenet of modernist and universalizing discourses: the notion of the subject constructing itself as human through the separation, classification, and subsequent possession of worldly things.
In Between the Waves everything is depicted as a sensitive, responsive surface, inseparable from its surroundings. Notably, the head ornaments stand out for their stark contrast of white and their verticality, which slices through the imagery with a phallic quality devoid of necessary genital connotations. Additionally, another significant element deserving attention is the arrangement of artificial flowers, bath sponges, and various colorful objects meticulously placed at the bottom of a pool, with the performers swimming around them akin to fish circling marine corals. Here, there exists no dichotomy between nature and artifice; instead, there is only brilliance and beauty, transcending conventional boundaries and inviting viewers to contemplate the interplay between the natural and the constructed, the human and the non-human.
Tejal Shah (Bhilai, India, 1979) is a contemporary artist who explores issues of gender, sexuality, identity and human rights through photography, video art and installations.
