Barbara Hammer (Los Angeles, USA, 1939-2019) è stata una regista e attivista, figura di spicco del cinema sperimentale militante che, a partire dagli anni Settanta, ha affrontato tematiche legate alla sessualità, all’identità di genere e all'attivismo politico diventando una figura importante nel movimento LGBTQ+. Hammer è stata una voce sempre più influente del femminismo queer e una cronista dell'auto-emancipazione femminile negli Stati Uniti e in molti altri luoghi del mondo. Le sue opere sono state esposte in importanti mostre personali come Would You Like To Meet Your Neighbor? (Skulpturenmuseum, Marl, 2023), Women I Love (Ratio 3, San Francisco, 2022 e Frans Josefs Kai 3, Vienna, 2021), Tell me there is a lesbian forever (Company Gallery, New York, 2021), Sisters! (La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Barcellona, 2020). A Barbara Hammer sono state dedicate retrospettive cinematografiche al MoMA di New York nel 2010, alla Tate Modern di Londra nel 2012 e le sue prime mostre personali alla galleria KOW di Berlino a partire dal 2011.

Barbara Hammer (Los Angeles, USA, 1939-2019) was a filmmaker and activist, a leading figure in militant experimental cinema who, beginning in the 1970s, addressed issues of sexuality, gender identity and political activism and became an influential figure in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Hammer has been an increasingly important voice of queer feminism and a chronicler of women's self-emancipation in the United States and many other places around the world. Her works has been shown in major solo exhibitions such as Would You Like To Meet Your Neighbour? (Skulpturenmuseum Marl 2023), Women I Love (Ratio 3, San Francisco 2022 and Frans Josefs Kai 3, Vienna 2021), Tell me there is a lesbian forever (Company Gallery, New York 2021), Sisters! (La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Barcelona 2020). Film retrospectives were dedicated to Barbara Hammer at MoMA in New York in 2010, at the Tate Modern in London in 2012 and her first solo exhibitions at the KOW gallery in Berlin starting in 2011.
